CMYK vs RGB: Why Colours Shift From Screen to Print (and How to Prevent It)
At Evergreen Graphics Group, we strive to create high-quality print and design products for our customers while providing expert guidance on the best way to produce every printed piece. We work with our clients as their print consultant and trusted advisor — helping them make informed decisions that lead to better results. We work for our clients, not a printing company.
One of the most common questions we hear is:
“Why does my printed piece look different than what I see on my screen?”
The answer usually comes down to CMYK vs RGB colour modes.
RGB: For Screens
RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is used for digital displays such as monitors, phones, and tablets. It produces bright, vibrant colours because light is being emitted rather than absorbed.
Designs created in RGB often appear more luminous and saturated on screen, which makes this colour mode ideal for websites, social media graphics, and digital ads. However, because printing relies on ink instead of light, RGB colours must be converted to CMYK before printing — and this conversion can result in subtle colour changes.
CMYK: For Print
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) is the standard colour mode used in professional printing. Ink or toner is layered onto paper, which naturally absorbs colour differently than a screen emits light.
Some bright or neon RGB colours fall outside CMYK’s printable colour range, meaning they cannot be reproduced exactly in print. Designing in CMYK from the start helps ensure more predictable results and reduces surprises when your final piece is produced.
