Bleed and Trim Explained: A Quick Print File Setup Guide

When preparing artwork for print, small setup mistakes can lead to big issues in the final product. Cropped text, white edges, or misaligned designs are all common problems—but they’re also completely avoidable.

At Evergreen Graphics Group, we help businesses across the GTA and Canada ensure their files are set up correctly before going to print. Understanding bleed and trim is one of the most important steps in that process.

What is Bleed?

Bleed is the extra area that extends beyond the final trim size of your design. This ensures that when your piece is cut to size, there are no unwanted white edges.

For most print projects, we recommend adding a 0.125" bleed on all sides.

Bleed is especially important for:

  • Business cards
  • Brochures and catalogs
  • Packaging and labels
  • Large format graphics

If your background colour or image touches the edge of your design, it must extend into the bleed area.

What is Trim?

The trim line is where your final printed piece will be cut. Due to slight variations during production, trimming is not always perfectly exact—which is why bleed and safe zones are so important.

Think of trim as the final size of your piece—but not the place to align critical design elements.

Why It Matters

Proper file setup helps:

  • Prevent reprints and delays
  • Ensure clean, professional results
  • Reduce production errors
  • Save time and cost

Whether you're printing marketing materials, packaging, or labels, these small details make a big difference.
